What they might have done in social media

For this assignment, I tried to look back at all the influential people that have affected history. Yeah,  that list is long. I settled on a powerful woman that became a humans rights activist. Isabella Baumfree was born into slavery in 1797. She was beaten and mistreated by her owner in New York state. Later she was forced into marriage and had 5 children. She fled slavery in 1827 after her owner failed to adhere to New York’s anti-slavery laws. Baumfree went under a religious conversion and changed her name to Sojourner Truth. She became heavily involved in civil rights movements as well as women’s rights movements. She delivered a speech, “Ain’t I A Woman?”, at a women’s rights convention in 1851. For her tweet, I pulled a short quote from her speech. Unfortunately, the character allowance was not as long as I thought it would be.

Since Truth was an activist, I think she would have used social media as a way to spread her message. There are several activists on different social media platforms today. It is an easy way to spread information and get a greater following, which in turn will hopefully push your movement forward.

I think it would be interesting to see how prior social movements would have evolved if there were quicker ways to get news circulated.

One transcript of Truth’s full speech is available here.
