Building Task Homework for Oct. 4th

Significance

“The value of the paper depends on what is contained in this (Results) section” (Nair and Nair 20).

This quote tells us that the results section is important to the validity of the paper. If your results are poorly explained, the paper will not hold a good reputation.

Practices (activities)

“Other studies of scientific discourse have suggested that scientists adjust the strength of their claims depending on the audience: texts meant for scientific insiders hedge and qualify claims, while lay persons and other outsiders strip out suck qualifiers, making claims seem more certain and less open to question.” (Haas 44-45).

Scientists want to make sure that their discourse is understood by outside sources so they will alter their words so that it makes sense to “lay persons”.

Identities

“Current knowledge is stated in present tense, whereas the work being reported and discussed in the paper is presented in past tense”(Nair and Nair 21).

This is important because those within the science discourse can understand whose work is being resented and when.

Relationships

“Convince readers that it is important that they continue to read”(IMRAD).

Readers need to read the papers to be able to get further educated and the only way that will work is if they are convinced to continue reading.

Politics

“Beginning college students approach academic tasks as if they believe that tasks are autonomous and context free” (Haas 46).

Connections

“She had come to a greater awareness of the rhetorical, contingent nature of both the activities and discourses she participated in within her chosen field, biology” (Haas 46).
